Stakeholders call for stiffer actions against counterfeit, adulterated products in Edo, Commend ESCPC's Proactiveness

Stakeholders in Edo State, Tuesday, September 29 2026, appealed to the state government and relevant agencies including security agencies to as a matter of urgent importance imposed stiffer penalty against those producing and selling counterfeit and adulterated products in the state, arguing their actions amount to criminal prosecutions.

They made the appeal during Town Hall/ Stakeholders'  meeting with the theme "Eradicating Counterfeit/Adulterated Products, Enforcing Consumer Right, Promoting Standards and Practising Fair and Responsible Trading in Edo State" organised by the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee.

The stakeholders drawn from the civil society organisations, market women, the security agencies, cement traders and members of the press among others, felt disenchanted about the flooding of fake products in the markets and trading stores across the state, insisting the products are causing more harms than good.

They commended the resilience of His Excellency, Sen Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State for putting up formidable mechanism to constitute the committee, while assuring of their support and collaboration to enable the committee succeed in the task ahead.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the chairman of the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee, Comrade Osaro Culture Iyamu, said that the recent enforcement of complaints and subsequent ban of counterfeit and adultrated products by the federal government across the country informed the decision for the town hall/stakeholders meeting, saying it was in line with the SHINE agenda of this present administration in the state.

He added that stakeholders had a role to play in the safety of the society from fake and  substandard products, noting that the rights of consumers ranging from rights choose, rights to information and rights to safety cannot be undermined.

He said further that the constitution of the consumer protection committee by the governor, was influenced by the health haphazard associated with the consumption of these fake and adultrated products, insisting the present government in the state will impose stiffer penalty against the perpetrators as many lives have been destroyed and damaged in the process.

He called on the support and collaboration of the stakeholders to enable his committee discharge its responsibility diligently and effectively towards building crime free society, assuring of the government readiness to prosecute any offender.

In a related development, presenting his goodwill message, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, zone 5 headquarters, Benin City, AIG Monday Agbonika, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zonal CID, DCP Gabriel Dibie Ph.D,  commended the efforts of the Edo State Consumer Protection Committee, in the fight against fake and adultrated products.

He assured of his office collaboration with the committee to arrest and prosecute any culprit who indulged in the sales and production of the fake and adultrated products to serve as deterrent to other criminal minded people in the state.

Stakeholders'  bemoan  abuse of consumers' rights  by Benin Electricity Distribution Company through over billing, Banks and communication over charges as well as fake products of palm oil, beans using sniper, fruits and vegetables using dangerous chemicals to preserve.

Present at the event include leadership of the Ekiosa market women, members of the United Beverages Association in Benin City, Hon. Commissioner for Oil and Gas, Edo State , Jon. Andrew Momodu, represented Conference of non governmental organisations in the state and Executive Chairman, Edo State Internal Revenue Service among others.

Suspected Cultists Attack  Odionwere, Elders, Okaighele In Obazuwa Community  Not less than twenty suspected cultists led by the former Okaighele, Odaro Peace Ibizugbe, of Obazuwa Community in the Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State,off the upper  Ekenwan road,  weekend  attacked the Odionwere, elders and the present Okaighele of the community.
