WE COMMEND OSHIOMHOLE-LED SPECIAL COMMITTEE AND EDO STATE GOVERNMENT:BENIN ROYAL MUSEUM WE STAND
The Leadership and entire Members of AIGUOBASINMWIN MOVEMENT WORLD-WIDE commend the Special Committee on the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA), chaired by former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, which was constituted by the administration of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Monday Okpebholo to probe the controversy surrounding the ownership, funding, and status of the controversial MOWAA project.
The Committee, constituted to establish the true ownership status of the facility, submitted its report to the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday, wherein it uncovered fraud and breach of trust.
Presenting the report, Senator Oshiomhole said the Committee found that the administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki committed over ₦3.8 Billion of Edo taxpayers’ funds to the project.
The Committee Chairman further disclosed that additional funds were received from donors, including the German Government, which donated €4 Million, and the Leventis Foundation, which contributed $1.5 Million.
The controversial MOWAA was originally conceived as the Benin Royal Museum, following sustained efforts by His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II to secure the return of artefacts looted from the ancient Benin Kingdom.
According to Senator Oshiomhole, the Obaseki administration initially agreed to fund the construction of the Royal Museum on land provided by the Oba of Benin. The Committee therefore recommended that MOWAA should be converted to its original status as the BENIN ROYAL MUSEUM.
Receiving the report, Governor Okpebholo commended the Committee for what he described as an "excellent and comprehensive job." He noted that the quality of the report demonstrated the Committee’s fairness and seriousness, and added that his administration would constitute another Committee to prepare a White Paper on the recommendations in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice.
The findings made available by the Oshiomhole-led Committee have further confirmed that our struggle was not in vain and has rekindled our fight for a greater Edo State.
We therefore appreciate Governor Monday Okpebholo for his commitment to implement the recommendations of the Oshiomhole-led Committee.
