Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has firmly reaffirmed the undisputed authority of the Oba of Benin, declaring to the diaspora community in the United Kingdom that "there is only one Oba in Edo State." Speaking on Saturday, August 1, 2026, during an ongoing meeting with Edo citizens in the UK, Governor Okpebholo emphasized the unique historical and cultural pre-eminence of the Benin Monarch.

While receiving a Swiss delegation and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) regarding repatriated Benin Bronzes, the Governor stated unequivocally: "There is only one Oba Palace in Edo State."
  • ​Defending Traditional Unity: The Governor’s position strongly aligns with citizens who reject efforts to fragment the Benin Traditional Institution through claims of independent kingdoms or separate traditional rulers in Edo South.

The Edo State High Court has declared unlawful the restriction of human and vehicular movement during the state’s environmental sanitation exercise, in a landmark judgment delivered on Thursday. Justice Isoken Urhomwen Erameh ruled that the enforcement of a stay-at-home order between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on sanitation days violates citizens’ constitutional rights. In its decision, the court held that such restrictions are inconsistent with Section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which guarantees freedom of movement. Suspected Cultists Attack  Odionwere, Elders, Okaighele In Obazuwa Community  Not less than twenty suspected cultists led by the former Okaighele, Odaro Peace Ibizugbe, of Obazuwa Community in the Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State,off the upper  Ekenwan road,  weekend  attacked the Odionwere, elders and the present Okaighele of the community.
