*GOVERNOR MONDAY OKPEBHOLO’S STATEMENT ON ARTEFACTS FINALLY NAILS OBASEKI*
History has been made.
Our long-standing struggle against the deliberate attempt to re-loot our returned stolen Artefacts by the Obaseki administration has been solidified by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
During a meeting with the Consul General of Switzerland and the Director General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments on the 1st of July 2026 at Government House, Benin City, the Governor declared that the returned stolen artefacts belong to the Oba’s Palace. He affirmed that there is only one Oba’s Palace in Edo State.
This historic and bold statement clearly distinguishes Governor Monday Okpebholo from his predecessor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who was engaged in a public contest over the artefacts with the revered Palace of the Oba of Benin throughout his administration.
In light of this, the leadership and entire membership of AIGUOBASINMWIN MOVEMENT WORLD-WIDE sincerely commend the Governor and urge him to sustain this courageous stance and support for the Benin Nation.
However, we want to once again respectfully advise Governor Monday Okpebholo to fulfill his campaign promise regarding the renovation of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre. The monument is currently in an unhealthy state, overtaken by grasses and trees, and requires urgent intervention to befit our heritage.
Similarly, we respectfully request Governor Monday Okpebholo to look into the growing concern of Edo people regarding the privatization of Edo Festival which is a statutory program of the Ministry of Art, Culture and Tourism because it is on record. The Ministry of Art, Culture and Tourism should be allowed and empowered to organize Edo Festival on a yearly basis as it was done by previous administration.
