The Unhappy Opposition: When Progress Becomes Their Greatest Disappointment
The Unhappy Opposition: When Progress Becomes Their Greatest Disappointment

In every democracy, opposition plays an important role in holding government accountable and offering alternative perspectives. However, there are moments when political rivalry goes beyond healthy criticism and descends into an unhealthy desire to see government efforts fail, regardless of the consequences for the people.
This unfortunate reality appears evident among certain opposition elements in Edo State, who seem unable to acknowledge any positive development recorded under the administration of Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo. Despite visible progress in infrastructure, security, education, and rural development, some individuals remain committed to dismissing, downplaying, or completely ignoring every achievement.
Across the state, roads are being constructed and rehabilitated, abandoned projects are receiving renewed attention, and previously neglected communities are beginning to experience the presence of government. Efforts are also being intensified to improve security and create a better environment for economic and social growth. These are developments that directly benefit ordinary citizens, irrespective of political affiliation.
Yet, for some critics, every success appears to be a source of discomfort. When a road project is completed, they remain silent. When security agencies record breakthroughs against criminal elements, they offer no commendation. When communities celebrate government intervention, they look the other way. However, the moment a challenge emerges, no matter how isolated, it is amplified and presented as evidence that nothing is working.
Such an approach raises important questions about the true motivation behind their actions. Is the priority the welfare of the people, or merely the pursuit of political advantage?
Constructive criticism is both necessary and welcome in any democratic society. Governments must be held accountable, and citizens have every right to demand transparency, efficiency, and better service delivery. However, constructive criticism seeks solutions and improvement, while blind opposition seeks only to discredit and obstruct.
Those who genuinely love Edo State should place the interests of the people above partisan considerations. Development should never be viewed through the lens of political loyalty. A newly constructed road benefits everyone. Improved security protects all residents. Better schools provide opportunities for every child, regardless of family background or political affiliation.
History teaches that societies make progress when citizens unite around shared goals and celebrate achievements that improve collective well-being. No state can advance when some individuals become emotionally invested in failure simply because they are opposed to those in authority.
As Edo State continues on its path of growth and development, the people will ultimately judge based on results rather than political rhetoric. Roads can be seen. Projects can be inspected. Communities can testify to the changes taking place around them. Development speaks louder than propaganda.
While critics are entitled to their opinions, no amount of negativity can erase tangible achievements. In the end, the welfare of the people must remain the highest priority, and every genuine step toward progress deserves recognition, encouragement, and support.
For those who have chosen perpetual criticism over objective assessment, the greatest disappointment may well be the continued progress and transformation taking place across Edo State.
