LP Holds Edo Congress, Inaugurates New Exco
The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party, LP, on Saturday 25 April 2026, concluded its ward, local government, and state congresses across the state by electing, Engr. Michael Oshiobugie as Chairman.
The party Congresses produced 24-member executive officers in the state which were drawn from the three senatorial districts .
By affirmation, the congress produced a 24-member executive structure drawn from the senatorial districts as follows: Edo South (9), Edo North (8), and Edo Central (7).
The elected LGA officers, delegates, and stakeholders in the various senatorial districts administered the congresses, and the officers were elected by affirmation.
The State Chairman was thereafter elected by the elected LGA chairmen through endorsement and voting, where upon Engr. Michael Oshiobugie emerged as Chairman, endorsed by 13 elected LGA chairmen out of 18.
The ward congresses were held across the 192 wards on the 23rd of April, 2026, at designated ward centers and the state secretariat, administered by the party’s legal officer.
On the 24th of April, 2026, the Local Government Area (LGA) congresses were conducted across the 18 LGAs of Edo State at approved venues. These were supervised and monitored by the Electoral Monitoring and Endorsement Committee.
The state congress was held on the 25th of April, 2026, across the three senatorial districts — Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North.
Inaugurating the new executives, the National Officer in charge of Edo State congresses, Dr. Kunle Ademola, conveyed the directive of the National Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman, to ensure a smooth and credible process.
He commended the peaceful conduct of the congresses and urged the newly elected executives to work diligently toward strengthening the party and ensuring electoral success.
In his acceptance remarks, Engr. Michael Oshiobugie expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and his colleagues, pledging to work with unity, discipline, and commitment to deliver the party in the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party has elected Sen Nenadi Usman as National Chairman and Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary.
Others members elected are, Mrs. Nike Oriola, Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary; Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, National Organising Secretary; Comrade Anslem Eragbe, National Financial Secretary; Hilda Dokubo, National Women Leader.
It would be recalled that on Wednesday, 4th September 2024, Senator Usman was appointed to lead the National Caretaker Committee of the party at a NEC meeting in Umuahia, following a leadership vacuum created by the expiration of the tenure of the former leadership. She successfully steered the party through a turbulent period marked by leadership disputes, which were ultimately resolved in her favour by the appellate court.
A former Minister of Finance and Senator, Usman brings a wealth of experience and proven capacity to her new role. As the 2027 general elections approach, she bears the immediate responsibility of positioning the party for electoral success. Following its strong showing in the 2023 general elections, the Labour Party has firmly established itself as a formidable political platform, a foundation Senator Usman is poised to consolidate upon.
Prior to the convention, Senator Usman had been recognised as the Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, 30th January 2026, following a Federal High Court judgement delivered on 21st January 2026 affirming her leadership. This decision was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal in a unanimous judgement delivered on Tuesday, 21st April 2026.
In her acceptance speech, Senator Usman expressed gratitude to party members for the confidence reposed in her and pledged to reposition the party for greater success. She commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, for his exemplary leadership, and assured members that she would not let the party down in her new capacity. She also reaffirmed her commitment to fostering unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party ahead of the next general elections.
In his remarks, Governor Alex Otti charged the newly elected National Working Committee to provide purposeful leadership and strengthen the party’s structures nationwide.
