Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal Commence Sitting In Benin
The three-member Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal, headed by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, began its inaugural sitting and pre-hearing today at the High Court premises in Benin City, Edo State. The tribunal adjourned proceedings until December 17, 2024.
The event marked the official commencement of petitions filed by different political parties and their candidates challenging the September 21, 2024, election in the state.
Specifically, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is asking the tribunal to nullify the election result and declare its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, the winner of the election.
It will be recalled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the poll on Sunday, September 22, 2024. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating the PDP’s Dr. Asue Ighodalo, who scored 247,274 votes, and the Labour Party’s Barr. Olumide Akpata, who polled 22,763 votes.
Dissatisfied with INEC’s declaration, the PDP and six other political parties that participated in the poll approached the tribunal to challenge the electoral umpire’s decision.
