Edo 2024 : Shuaibu, Okpevbolo Survives Assassination Attempt in Benin

What was supposed to be a sweet homecoming by reinstated Edo State deputy governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, to reclaim his mandate following the landmark judgement by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja which voided the April 14 impeachment by 18 out of the 24 members of the Edo State House of Assembly, turned sour Thursday in Benin as thugs turned loose and attacked his motorcade.

Comrade Shaibu flew in a chartered aircraft in company of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorsip candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, former member of the House of Representatives, Ms. Omosede Igbinedion and other top politicians.

In the mayhem, which occurred on Airport Road, the governorsip candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 21 election, Senator Monday Okpebholo was shot at while one of his security details was reportedly shot dead and two others, critically injured by Miracle Centre, Church of God Mission.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Funso Adegboye, was at hand to welcome Comrade Shaibu at the Airport, where thousands of his supporters turned out to receive him at a carnival like ceremony.

Echoes of gunshots rang out of the unmarked Toyota Hiace mini bus which the attackers rode in as soon as the reinstated deputy governor drove out of the airport on his way home in the Government Reserved  Area (GRA).

 It took the spirited efforts of riot policemen, who   promptly returned fire to beat the heavily armed  hoodlums back, just as the reinstated deputy.          governor who rode in company of Senator.              Okpebholo, drove speedily away.                                
According to sources, the three APC's security details were shot during the attack by the armed men and are presently recuperating at an undisclosed hospital in the Edo State capital.

A statement by Mr. Godswill Inegbe,  Legislative Aide To Senator Okpebholo on Media and Communication confirmed the shooting of the three mobile policemen during the unprovoked attack.

He said that at the moment, the APC governorsip candidate has been admitted in an undisclosed hospital in Benin where he is receiving medical attention along with other members of his entourage who were victims of the brutal attack..

Persistent attempts to speak with the Edo State Police spokesman, Mr. Chidi Nwabuzor on his mobile phone proved futile as he was said to be in a long meeting with the police commissioner.

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced Barr. Musa U. Ikhilor as Secretary to State Government (SSG); Hon. Samson Osagie PhD as Attorney General and Commissioner For Justice; and Dr Cyril Adams Oshiomhole as Commissioner for Health.
