Federal High Court Nullifies PDP Governorship Primaries in Edo State.

In a significant ruling today, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Ekwo, declared that the PDP nomination processes were non-compliant with its own constitution. As a result, the court has set aside all processes leading to the Edo PDP governorship primaries held on February 22nd, 2024.

The court's decision means that the PDP has no candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election on September 21st in Edo State. Consequently, Asue Ighodalo and the PDP will not be on the ballot for this critical election.

The Edo State High Court has declared unlawful the restriction of human and vehicular movement during the state’s environmental sanitation exercise, in a landmark judgment delivered on Thursday. Justice Isoken Urhomwen Erameh ruled that the enforcement of a stay-at-home order between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on sanitation days violates citizens’ constitutional rights. In its decision, the court held that such restrictions are inconsistent with Section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, which guarantees freedom of movement. It further found the measures to be in breach of Articles 12 and 13 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights. Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Challenging Edo Governorship Election The Supreme Court has ruled that the petitioners seeking to nullify the Edo State governorship election failed to substantiate their claims. Delivering its verdict on Thursday, the apex court held that since the petitioners did not challenge results from all the polling units across the state, it was “absurd” to demand the nullification of the entire election and to be declared winners. The court further stated that the appellants failed to call witnesses or tender admissible evidence to prove irregularities in the disputed polling units. With this ruling, the Supreme Court has affirmed the outcome of the election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
