Ize-Iyamu Withdrawals From Edo Governorship Race Endorses Okpebholo
Bowing to pressures from some top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), frontline Edo State governorship aspirant, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has formally announced his withdrawal from tomorrow's primary of the party.
Sources close to Pastor, as Ize-Iyamu is fondly called by his supporters however disclosed that he has thrown his support behind Senator Monday "Akpakomiza" Okpebholo from Edo Central.
The source said that the decision to adopt Senator Okpebholo was arrived at after a series of meetings between, Ize-Iyamu, a former Secretary to Edo State Government during ex-Governor Lucky Igbinedion.
According to him, Senator Okpebholo was chosen in line with the party's tacit decision to zone the governorship to Edo Central which is yet to produce a governor since the return to democratic rule in 1999, after from Senator Oserhemien Osunbor's brief stint between 2007 and 2008.
In his letter dated February 16 and addressed to the party's national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, Ize-Iyamu, the ruling party governorship candidate in the 2020 election, wrote that a few months ago, after extensively interacting with family, friends, associates and supporters, he joined the governorship race as a result of his passion, commitment to the cause of rescuing the state from its current decrepitude
He said that he entered the contest as a progressive democrat with an open mind to keenly contest and accept the result at a process that is fair, credible and transparent.
While appreciating the commendable effort made by the National Working Committee (NWÇ) of tne party to correct the erroneous impression created by some aspirants including himself had disqualified from the gubernatorial race, he insisted that the NWC, the authentic screening committee okayed all twelve aspirants who purchased and completed the nomination forms.
He wrote: "Having been cleared to contest. I regrettably wish to announce my withdrawal from the race. Although painful this decision has become imperative after an exhaustive consultation with my family, friends, associates and supporters. I make this sacrifice in the interest of peace.
"I humbly appeal to the good people of Edo State to accept my very personal promise to be there for times. I acknowledge the fatherly role of President Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. as well as the patty's National leadership for their fairness."
